About Richard Rosen
I began my study of Yoga in 1980 at the Yoga Room
in Berkeley, California. Two years later I enrolled in
the Teacher Training Program at the B.K.S. Iyengar
Institute in San Francisco, where I attended
classes for several years and apprenticed with
Manouso Manos.

In 1987 my friend Rodney Yee and I opened the
Piedmont Yoga Studio in Oakland, California, and
we’re still going strong today. We offer more than
60 public classes each week, taught by a staff of
around 25 teachers. In addition to a range of public
classes, we also have classes for teens, seniors,
and Moms-to-be, back care, and for students with
disabilities and special needs. We also conduct a
10-month Advanced Studies Program, and host a
teacher training program for disabled students.
Sometime around 1990 I began contributing to Yoga Journal magazine, and over the years I've
contributed nearly 300 reviews of Yoga videos and audio cassettes, along with book reviews, feature
articles and columns, and the asana instructions for YJ's website. My first book,
The Yoga of Breathing,
was published by Shambhala in 2002, and its follow-up,
Pranayama: Beyond the Fundamentals, came
out in 2006. My third book,
Yoga for 50+, was published by Ulysses Press in 2004. I've also contributed
to several other magazines, among them Ascent and Shambhala Sun, and anthologies.
